- Most schools that offer an Associate of Science in Emergency Medical Services require incoming students to have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- An Associate of Science in EMS program is designed to take about two years to complete.
- Although not common, there are schools that offer the AS in EMS program online.聽 These programs are designed the same as an in-class degree program, but allow more flexibility for the student.

If you plan on going forward with this career, there are a few characteristics that are helpful to have.聽 In addition to being knowledgeable and putting your study to use, being confident, emotionally stable, being handle high-stress situations, and having good judgement are all imperative when it comes to success within your career in EMS.
- While you are going through your Associate of Science in EMS program, you will also want to think about what you need to be prepared for once you have graduated.聽 There are physical demands in this career, such as lifting, balancing, and carrying patients, sometimes in excess of 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance).聽 You also may be driving the ambulance, which requires good navigation skills, and verbal and reasoning skills.
