5 Must-Do Things To Become A Firefighter

5 things to become a firefighter

So you want to become a Firefighter, but you’re not sure where to begin? The following will walk you through five steps that should be completed.

1. Receive Your Emergency Medical Technician Certification

Many fire departments require that applicants have an EMT certification. By receiving this before you begin your quest for employment, you will be ahead of the game. Sign up for courses at your local school to earn your certification.

This is a big step to being well on your way to a successful career as a Firefighter.

2. Take Fire Technology Courses or Receive Your Fire Science Degree

While this step is not exactly required by fire departments, it certainly will not hurt your resume. By taking these courses or receiving that degree, you will show a great deal of dedication which will speak volumes.

You will receive some very helpful information in this courses like building construction and fire behavior. While there is nothing like hands-on experience, sometimes it is the facts and figures that can save a life, especially when it comes to knowing the intricacies of buildings and fires.

3. Begin Taking Firefighter Tests

First you will want to find out which fire departments are testing. Find out what is on the tests and begin preparing. While it is not a big deal if you fail as you can simply take it again, why go through all of this with that outlook?

Each Firefighting test better prepares you for the next exam, but be sure to properly prepare for the written, physical, and oral tests so you can pass the first time around.

There are sites you can sign up with that will send you notifications as to which departments are testing.

A career in Firefighting will be well within your reach once you take this step.

4. Stop By Fire Stations

Stopping by fire stations and talking to Firefighters is a great way to begin networking. This is especially important to do at the station you are planning to apply to.

Speak with the Firefighters and get a first-hand glimpse as to what it is like working in the field. Make sure to ask current Firefighters question, listen to their conversations, and become familiar with the surroundings.

All of this will allow you to be better prepared for your hiring interview.

5. Prepare For Your Background Check

First you will want to find out what is expected for your Firefighter background check. Once you receive the list, make sure to follow up on everything that will be checked and make sure you have all of your ducks in a row.

You don’t want to pass every aspect and then miss out on this opportunity because something is amiss on your record. Find out what your record looks like before they do.

If you follow all of these steps, you will be well prepared to be gainfully employed as a Firefighter. We wish you the best of luck!
