What You’ll Learn Going from EMT to Paramedic

You can complete the Paramedic program in as little as 12 months. Each semester is a lecture and lab combination course that builds on your knowledge and skills. In Paramedic I, you learn roles and responsibilities, medical legal issues, and well-being of the paramedic. Other topics covered in the first course are illness and injury prevention, ethics, medical terminology review, and patient assessment. Paramedic II covers a series of medical emergencies and how to respond with treatment for them. The Paramedic III course goes over more sensitive emergencies, like helping abuse and assault victims, hazardous material incidents, and assisting patients with special challenges.

Then you will have an externship for real-world experience. As an EMT, you already have an idea of what the job entails. You clock 94 hours of ride time between an ambulance and a hospital. Once you complete the program, you can sit for the Florida Paramedic exam or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam.
