EMT vs. Paramedic: What鈥檚 the Difference?

EMT vs. Paramedic

On the scene of an accident, you will see EMTs and Paramedics in action. Both first responders provide life-supporting services.

Both of them are knowledgeable about diseases and injuries. So, what鈥檚 the difference between an EMT and a Paramedic?

The Differences

EMTs and Paramedics have a difference in the length of their training. While you can get certified to become an EMT in as little as four months, Paramedic training can take up to a year to complete. The training for Paramedics also goes into more depth.

EMTs provide basic life support. Paramedics have been trained to provide advanced life support, including cardiac support and IV lines. The certification for Paramedics allows them to do more for patients, while EMTs provide only the basics.

Paramedics are trained to support patients who have cardiac problems or who have suffered severe trauma. EMTs work alongside the Paramedics to stabilize and transport these patients.

The Similarities

Both jobs are important in emergency medical services. Without either of them, many patients would not survive. The goal of EMTs and Paramedics is the same: Keep patients alive so that they can get to a hospital. Increasing survival rates is the common mission between these two levels of EMS providers.

Both EMTs and Paramedics are a high-demand career field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, they have a job outlook of 15%. That is much higher than the average expected job growth. Hospitals and ambulances need more EMT and Paramedic staff to keep up with the needs of patients.

Paramedics have the same training as EMTs. In fact, you can choose to become an EMT first and then continue your training to become a Paramedic. Paramedics have training that extends beyond what EMTs learn how to do.
