In today鈥檚 fast-changing world with its shifting economy, it鈥檚 no wonder students struggle to choose a career path. Traditional jobs are disappearing, while new fields are opening up all the time鈥攁nd the high cost of post-secondary education makes it imperative to choose well. You don鈥檛 want to sink thousands of dollars into a degree that isn鈥檛 going to lead to a successful career that you will love.

What if there was another way? There is!

Technical schools are providing learners of today the opportunity to learn about a career and earn practical knowledge and skills without going in over their heads in debt and wasted time.

For instance, are you considering health care? According to one , only half of students were completely sure of their path when they entered their training program, but over 83% were certain by the time they were done. Learning more about the opportunities and interacting with other students helped them choose the best path.

In this article, we鈥檒l detail why getting a diploma from a technical school may be the best choice for you. Here are six reasons you should consider it!

  1. You don’t pay for more than you need

Technical schools are a great option for getting started on your career. Primarily because they鈥檙e cheaper than universities, they can serve as a stepping stone for a future degree. With your trade school diploma, you already have a credential to show your potential employers, so you can start earning money and gaining valuable experience in your field.

Technical schools often offer student loans, as colleges and universities do鈥攂ut these loans tend to be smaller than those offered through private lenders.

  1. You鈥檒l get hands-on experience

Hands-on experience is vital to any career. It provides an opportunity to learn new skills and apply them in real-world situations, allowing you to gain valuable hands-on knowledge that will help you master more complex tasks later.

There are many different types of hands-on experience you can get at a technical school, including:

  • Working on teams and projects with other students
  • Using actual systems and tools implemented in the real world
  • Dealing with problems faced in the actual work setting.

3. Students graduate sooner

You can complete a technical program in one to two years鈥攕ometimes even less than a year. This is especially beneficial if you’re testing out a career path and are anxious to get a job. Technical school will allow you to get the skills and knowledge needed for a job faster than if you enroll at a university or college.

Employers often prefer candidates who have credentials. This means a diploma gives students an advantage when applying for jobs because they will be able to demonstrate their ability and experience more quickly than those without鈥攑articularly now when the skills gap is more pronounced than ever.

4. A dedicated career services team will guide you

The career services team at your technical school is full of people who have been in your shoes. They鈥檙e there to help you find a job that鈥檚 right for you, based on your aptitudes and the income you are hoping to earn.

The best part? They’ll also help with resume and cover letter writing and interview skills so that everything feels natural and relaxed when it comes time for an interview with an employer.

5. Instructors understand your needs

Instructors can help you get the most out of your schooling. They are experts in their fields and can spot problem areas and gaps in your understanding.

For example, if you’re struggling with a specific subject or time management, an instructor will know how to help you overcome this challenge. Most instructors assist students in improving upon weaknesses through tutoring sessions or additional resources like online courses and study groups.

Lastly, instructors often connect students with alumni who have gone through the same program at their school鈥攖his is invaluable for making connections within the community!

6. Classes are smaller and more personal.

In a technical school, a smaller class size means you’ll get more attention from your instructors than in a larger classroom setting. You’ll also be able to ask questions of the instructor if you need help with something or have any other concerns about the coursework.

If you need help understanding something in class and feel uncomfortable asking your professor what it means, they are often available after class to answer questions and provide clarification. This can be especially helpful for people who are new to the field and want some additional guidance about the concepts being presented.

Technical Schools Provide the Experience and Skills You Need

At a technical school, you can get the skills and experience you need to land a job that is right for you. Technical schools are designed to provide hands-on learning, which helps students develop the technical proficiency they need to enter their chosen field.

Technical programs offer accelerated coursework and exams, allowing students to graduate faster than they would at traditional colleges or universities. Students also have access to industry leaders who teach them practical skills and provide guidance throughout the program.

Taking your first step toward a career is an exciting and exhilarating experience. Many factors go into choosing what kind of education to pursue. One thing is certain: graduating from a technical school will set you up for success in today’s job market and tomorrow’s economy!

Education is a big part of a person鈥檚 potential and eventual success鈥攕tudents with higher education are . However, with the rising cost of education, many students don鈥檛 enroll in post-secondary education and end up with low-paying jobs where their education level may also limit their ability to rise in the ranks.

According to the (NCES), unemployment decreases and earnings increase with a higher education level. Their analysis showed that the median earnings of those with a master鈥檚 degree are roughly 17% higher than those with only a bachelor鈥檚 degree. The difference between bachelor鈥檚 degree holders and high school graduates is much more significant at 63%.

With the growing skills gap in the US, it鈥檚 particularly concerning that .

But hope is not lost for those who want to pursue higher education. People can leverage the Ability to Benefit program to increase their chances of landing that dream job.

What is the Ability to Benefit Program?

The Ability to Benefit (ATB) is a grant under the US Higher Education Act (HEA) that provides students the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education without a high school diploma. ATB is for students who can show they have the 鈥渁bility to benefit鈥 from a college education. The provision bases its funding on income and can provide students with up to 100% of tuition costs, books, and other fees.

ATB serves as a critical entry point to higher education, particularly for individuals with lower skills. The career pathway under the program is ideal for under-educated adults to address achievement gaps.

Eligibility

The program allows students to join a career pathway program and an adult education at the same time. To qualify, students must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Not have a high school diploma or completed a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • Meet any one of the following:
    • Have six credits (or equivalent) toward a certificate or degree
    • Pass an examination recognized by the US Department of Education
    • Fulfill a state process approved by the US Secretary of Education

Taking the Ability to Benefit Test

The Florida Department of Education recently announced that institutions could use either a common placement method or an alternative method to test students鈥 college readiness. Please check the for the common placement tests and alternative methods accepted by the state.听

When Taking the ATB Test

Most testing centers are by appointment. For students with a referral from Federal Financial Aid, it鈥檚 best to call the testing center鈥檚 hotline to schedule an exam.

On the day of the exam, individuals must present a valid ID, such as:

  • High School ID
  • Current Passport
  • Latest State or Federal ID
  • Driver鈥檚 License
  • Tribal ID
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Naturalization Card

Note: No other items will be allowed inside the testing center.

Retesting

Students who fail to achieve the minimum score required for reading, writing, and math can retake the exam after a two-week study period. Students may only retake the test sections they failed.

Courses You Can Take while Taking GED

ATB students must be enrolled in adult education and post-secondary coursework in an eligible career pathway program (ECPP) to maintain their eligibility. Here are some courses students can take along with their GED:

Medical Assisting

The medical assisting program is open to students using the ATB. Medical assisting programs usually last from nine to 12 months and provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the healthcare field.

Once a student completes an associate degree, they can have more opportunities for higher pay and career advancement

Dental Assisting

Dental assisting programs prepare students to gain employment in the dental field, working closely with dentists to provide patient care and perform clinical tasks. This program usually takes around 34 weeks to complete and lets students receive intensive knowledge in dental practice.

Pharmacy Technician

Students can also take a pharmacy technician program that allows them to assist pharmacists as they support patients with their medications. They can work in various pharmaceutical industries (community, hospital, production, or sales). Their role involves filling order prescriptions and discussing concerns about medications.

Programs typically last from 10 to 12 months.

Nursing Assistant

A nursing assistant program includes a curriculum that teaches students nursing theory and practice. Students will learn the basics of medical care and receive hands-on training to help them provide the best patient care possible.

Veterinary Assisting

Those interested in animal care can take a veterinary assistant training program designed to provide them with theoretical and practical knowledge. They will learn the best animal care practices while providing critical support and assistance to veterinary professionals.

Completion of this program takes 10 months.

Take Advantage of the Ability to Benefit Program

If you鈥檙e interested in pursuing higher education and improving your career pathway, the ATB program is a great stepping stone. 六六社 College encourages you to consult a career counselor to understand how you can align your education plans with your career goals.

After high school graduation ceremonies and parties wind down for new graduates, it鈥檚 time to get serious and plan for the future. While many people first consider pursuing a college degree, college is not the only post-secondary option out there. Recently, technical schools have been getting more attention from learners鈥攁nd it鈥檚 easy to see why. Several factors influence a person鈥檚 decision to get an academic degree at a university or earn a certificate from a vocational school. These can include the subject of study, tuition costs, and the potential to earn a good living after completion, to name a few.听

One showed that 49% of students believe that higher education is no longer worth the cost, with 89% agreeing that student loan debt is a significant concern. Still, education can be a critical part of your success in life, and a certificate or diploma is proof of your qualifications. These can help fast-track a career and give students the leverage they need to increase their chances of obtaining fulfilling and well-paying employment.

Technical School vs. College: Know the Difference

If you鈥檙e contemplating what path to take, here are the main differences between a technical school and a college.

Technical School

A technical school鈥攐ften called a trade school or vocational school鈥攊s a specialized, career-focused institution that provides students with training in a specific field. Often, students will receive hard skills training, giving them hands-on experience in their chosen area of study. The lessons involve a combination of practical and classroom learning. Health care is a perfect example, with students studying in the fields of EMT, nursing, medical assisting, and veterinary assisting. These students study in a classroom and spend clinical hours in a medical setting.

Technical school programs focus on one specific trade or skill. This means students do not need to take as many general education subjects they won鈥檛 need for their chosen career pathway. The majority of the classes the student attends are relevant to their field.听

Consequently, enrolling in a technical school usually allows students to complete their courses faster compared to a traditional college. Many programs can be completed in less than a year.听

In terms of employability, technical school graduates often land jobs faster since they already have the knowledge and skills required by most employers. This is particularly crucial as the skills gap continues to grow. McKinsey reports that already have problems finding skilled workers or expect to within the next few years.

Technical schools are also far more affordable than colleges. Graduates of technical schools spend less to earn their credentials鈥攁nd yet their starting salaries can be similar to those who graduate from private universities. 93% of students who had apprenticeships keep their jobs and

College

A college or university offers students a higher education that includes soft and hard skills while gaining knowledge and expertise in their chosen fields. College students can choose a major area of study they want to focus on. However, unlike in technical schools, students spend the first year or two of their studies taking general education courses before they start more specialized classes. Once they鈥檝e chosen their major, students turn their attention to mastering industry-specific skills. A college education also develops a rounded skill set, including things like analytical thinking, communication skills, and problem-solving that will be useful once they graduate.

College students spend an average of four years completing their undergraduate studies. While they can also receive internships during their time in school, these are often not as focused as those offered through technical school apprenticeship programs. In some programs, students may need to study for and pass licensing exams before employment.

College admission requirements are also more involved. Students may have to pass an admissions test, submit ACT or SAT scores, write essays, secure a letter of recommendation, and/or fill out application forms. This takes time, so students must begin their college application process as early as their junior year.听

For technical schools, the admissions process is relatively simple. Students usually only need to submit their high school diplomas, although there may be other requirements involved.听

Technical School vs. College: Which is Right for You?

The choice depends on your personal and career goals. Consider your interests, what you want to achieve, how much you would like to earn, your budget, and your preferred timeline.

If you would prefer a solid foundational education and cost is not an issue, a college degree may be the right choice for you. But if you need to choose a more economical approach, consider technical training programs that will allow you to complete your studies quickly and secure a job right after graduation.

What the program means for you, and what comes next

President Biden, Vice President Harris, and the U.S. Department of Education have announced a three-part plan to help working and middle-class federal student loan borrowers鈥 transition back to regular payment as pandemic-related support expires. This plan includes loan forgiveness of up to $20,000. Many borrowers and families may be asking themselves 鈥渨hat do I have to do to claim this relief?鈥 This page is a resource to answer those questions and more. There will be more details announced in the coming weeks. To be notified when the process has officially opened, sign up at the .

The Biden Administration’s Student Loan Debt Relief Plan

Part 1. Final extension of the student loan repayment pause

Due to the economic challenges created by the pandemic, the Biden-Harris Administration has extended the student loan repayment pause a number of times. Because of this, no one with a federally held loan has had to pay a single dollar in loan payments since President Biden took office.

To ensure a smooth transition to repayment and prevent unnecessary defaults, the Biden-Harris Administration will extend the pause a final time through December 31, 2022, with payments resuming in January 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to do anything to extend my student loan pause through the end of the year?

  • No. The extended pause will occur automatically.

Part 2. Providing targeted debt relief to low- and middle-income families

To smooth the transition back to repayment and help borrowers at highest risk of delinquencies or default once payments resume, the U.S. Department of Education will provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients. Borrowers are eligible for this relief if their individual income is less than $125,000 or $250,000 for households.

In addition, borrowers who are employed by non-profits, the military, or federal, state, Tribal, or local government may be eligible to have all of their student loans forgiven through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This is because of time-limited changes that waive certain eligibility criteria in the PSLF program. These temporary changes expire on October 31, 2022. For more information on eligibility and requirements, go to .

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I know if I am eligible for debt cancellation?

  • To be eligible, your annual income must have fallen below $125,000 (for individuals) or $250,000 (for married couples or heads of households)
  • If you received a Pell Grant in college and meet the income threshold, you will be eligible for up to $20,000 in debt cancellation.
  • If you did not receive a Pell Grant in college and meet the income threshold, you will be eligible for up to $10,000 in debt cancellation.

What does the 鈥渦p to鈥 in 鈥渦p to $20,000鈥 or 鈥渦p to $10,000鈥 mean?

  • Your relief is capped at the amount of your outstanding debt.
  • For example: If you are eligible for $20,000 in debt relief, but have a balance of $15,000 remaining, you will only receive $15,000 in relief.

What do I need to do in order to receive loan forgiveness?

  • Nearly 8 million borrowers may be eligible to receive relief automatically because relevant income data is already available to the U.S. Department of Education.
  • If the U.S. Department of Education doesn’t have your income data – or if you don’t know if the U.S. Department of Education has your income data, the Administration will launch a simple application in the coming weeks.
  • The application will be available before the pause on federal student loan repayments ends on December 31st.
  • If you would like to be notified by the U.S. Department of Education when the application is open, please sign up at the .

What is the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program?

  • The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program forgives the remaining balance on your federal student loans after 120 payments working full-time for federal, state, Tribal, or local government; military; or a qualifying non-profit.
  • Temporary changes, ending on Oct. 31, 2022, provide flexibility that makes it easier than ever to receive forgiveness by allowing borrowers to receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF.
  • Enrollments on or after Nov. 1, 2022 will not be eligible for this treatment. We encourage borrowers to sign up today. .

Part 3. Make the student loan system more manageable for current and future borrowers

Income-based repayment plans have long existed within the U.S. Department of Education. However, the Biden-Harris Administration is proposing a rule to create a new income-driven repayment plan that will substantially reduce future monthly payments for lower- and middle-income borrowers.

The rule would:

  • Require borrowers to pay no more than 5% of their discretionary income monthly on undergraduate loans. This is down from the 10% available under the most recent income-driven repayment plan.
  • Raise the amount of income that is considered non-discretionary income and therefore is protected from repayment, guaranteeing that no borrower earning under 225% of the federal poverty level鈥攁bout the annual equivalent of a $15 minimum wage for a single borrower鈥攚ill have to make a monthly payment.
  • Forgive loan balances after 10 years of payments, instead of 20 years, for borrowers with loan balances of $12,000 or less.
  • Cover the borrower’s unpaid monthly interest, so that unlike other existing income-driven repayment plans, no borrower’s loan balance will grow as long as they make their monthly payments鈥攅ven when that monthly payment is $0 because their income is low.

The Biden-Harris Administration is working to quickly implement improvements to student loans. Check back to this page for updates on progress. If you’d like to be the first to know, .

Proper handling of animals鈥攊ncluding restraint鈥攊s part of a veterinary assistant鈥檚 job responsibilities, and is an essential skill for vet techs and veterinarians to effectively provide care. At first, restraining animals may seem simple, but proper animal handling and restraint go far beyond just holding the animal down. In fact, it can be one of the most challenging yet underappreciated parts of animal care. If the animal is anxious and resists, veterinarians may find it hard to administer medications or carry out necessary procedures. This is particularly problematic when the animal needs emergency care.听

Medications for sedating or tranquilizing animals are reserved for use in absolutely necessary instances since they can cause undesirable side effects that may risk the animal鈥檚 health and safety. When sedation isn鈥檛 ideal, proper animal restraint may be the best solution.

How to Handle Animals (And Why You Should Do It Properly)

Animals may react unpredictably to veterinary treatment and may be triggered by the equipment, staff, strange smells, and unfamiliar environment. They may display anxious or defensive aggression because they feel threatened. Handling animals appropriately is crucial to ensure that neither the animals nor the handlers suffer injuries. Data from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) shows that about . Using safe procedures and correct techniques can help prevent such incidents. Here are a few tips:

Know the Different Types of Animal Behavior

Before approaching the animal, take a moment to observe how they鈥檙e acting. Notice their body language and see how the animal interacts with other animals, the staff, the owner, and the environment. This will give you an idea of how to approach and handle them for the procedure. In general, animal behavior can be categorized in three ways:

Friendly Animals: These animals seem relaxed. They stand, sit, or lie comfortably. They don鈥檛 show any aggression when touched. Still, it鈥檚 best to approach them cautiously since their behavior can change suddenly.

Anxious Animals: These animals feel nervous, or even threatened. Their stance is stiff and their ears often lie flat. Some dogs and cats tremble or hold their tails low or between their legs. These animals tend to shift to aggressive behavior quickly.  Try to be calm and reassuring when approaching them.

Aggressive Animals: These animals immediately show you that they don鈥檛 like the situation. Aside from having a stiff and defensive stance, they may also bare their teeth, snap, and hiss or growl. When you have an aggressive animal, it鈥檚 best to prepare the proper restraint equipment.

Have the Proper Restraint Equipment

According to the , animal restraint 鈥渟hould provide the least restraint required to allow the specific procedure(s) to be performed properly.鈥 The recommendation also includes applying restraint that reduces the animal鈥檚 fear, pain, suffering, and stress while ensuring that the staff and animal are not harmed during the process.

Here are some examples of animal restraint equipment that you should learn how to use for your practice:

  • Muzzles: These are often used for dogs. You should first assess the animal to know what muzzle type and size would be needed.
  • Leads or graspers: These are useful when you can鈥檛 predict the animal鈥檚 behavior. Some people prefer using them in pairs for additional control.
  • Nets: Nets are the most common choice for smaller animals. Ensure that the size and strength are adequate to avoid injuries to the animal.
  • Extension poles: These lightweight poles give you additional reach when restraining an animal. Often, they are used in tandem with nets and graspers when the animal in question is being handled from a distance.
  • Towels and blankets: Some animals may need their eyes or head covered to help calm them down. Towels and blankets can also help control smaller animals, such as rabbits, lambs, and foxes.
  • Halters: This animal restraint can help control bigger animals. This is the restraint of choice for livestock animals, such as sheep, goats, horses, and cows.

Understand Various Techniques for Animal Handling

There are a few different ways to restrain or control an animal in your care, each appropriate under different circumstances鈥攂ut the important thing is to always show kindness and respect.

Physical restraint means holding the animal鈥檚 body still with direct contact, often using the tools listed above.

Environmental restraint involves managing the animal鈥檚 environment to limit mobility. This can be done using kennels, cages, and traps.

Chemical restraint is the use of medications to inhibit the animal鈥檚 movement. These are often used in veterinary medicine to immobilize animals to carry out major procedures, such as surgery, relocation, ear-tagging, bio-measurement, or microchipping.

On top of having a solid understanding of animal restraint, you should also apply proper handling techniques, including:

  • Using a low voice when approaching the animal
  • Refraining from approaching the animal from behind
  • Handling them gently, with careful attention to supporting the neck and rump

For personal protection, handlers should be mindful of claws and teeth. Use of proper protective equipment, such as gloves, shoes, and a face shield should also be practiced.

Get Appropriate Education and Training on Animal Restraint

Whether you鈥檙e restraining domestic or wild animals, ensure that you have adequate training in animal handling and behavior. Animal behavior is complex and undertaking training to understand the nuances of different species鈥 behaviors can dramatically improve safety and equip you to reduce animal distress and respond to unpredictable animal behavior. Veterinary assistants must be especially well-trained to ensure animals are properly taken care of and that no harm comes to them, the handlers, or other animals in the vicinity.

The physical demands of being a paramedic often mean they have to work long shifts, usually 12 hours. During shifts, paramedics respond to myriad calls and are dispatched to several emergencies that may require them to rush, jump, carry weight, kneel, and bend while taking care of patients.听

Compared to the general population, the such as paramedics. Good physical health is directly related to mental health and resilience. Aside from getting enough sleep and eating right, doing workouts can help boost mood, reduce stress, and help avoid chronic illness. In short, working out helps paramedics become physically fit while improving their mood and mental health.

Workouts for Paramedics

It can sometimes seem impossible for paramedics to get into a regular workout program because of their hectic schedules. But that doesn鈥檛 mean they can鈥檛 engage in exercise. Here are some of the workouts paramedics can do even while they鈥檙e on the go:

  1. Squats

Squats are great for strengthening the lower body, particularly the glutes and quadriceps. This will help paramedics when they need to carry patients since it also allows them to use and train their core muscles.

The movement also improves the bones, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the leg muscles. Squats are also great for training the body to distribute the weight on the legs. As such, squats are critical for making paramedics鈥 knees more stable by improving the strength and stability of the knees and ankles.

To maximize the benefits of the squat, it鈥檚 important to have proper posture. Beginners can use a resistance band and attach it to a secure point. Grab the band and move away from the anchor point to increase the resistance. Make sure that the feet are positioned at least shoulder-width apart. Slowly go down. There should be a strain on the glutes and quadriceps muscles. Do at least 15 repetitions for three sets.

  1. Push-Ups

Paramedics also need to strengthen their arms. Doing push-ups is one of the most effective and fastest ways to build upper body strength, particularly working the chest, shoulders, and triceps. Push-ups can also work the lower back and core muscles when done in proper form.

Push-ups are perfect for paramedics on the go because they can be done anywhere and any time鈥攚ithout requiring any special equipment. While doing traditional push-ups regularly may be enough, adding variations to the routine is also wise. Some of the effective ones that can help power your upper body include:

  • Narrow push-ups
  • Wide push-ups
  • Rolling push-ups
  • Push-ups with hip abduction

To maximize the effectiveness of the push-up, keep the back straight while engaging the core. The glutes should be kept down, and the entire body should follow a straight line, not sagging or arching. Start in a high plank position and bring the body down using the arms. For those who find it a bit challenging at first, doing a kneeling push-up can help ease their way.

  1. Running

Paramedics are trained not to run when responding to calls, but it doesn鈥檛 mean they can鈥檛 do it as part of their workout routine. Whether outdoors or on a treadmill, running offers tons of benefits to support paramedics鈥 abilities on the job. Running helps increase cardiac and respiratory strength.

A showed that doing just 5 to 10 minutes of running, even at a moderate pace, can significantly reduce the risk of mortality from strokes, heart attacks, and other conditions. However, the recommendation is to for five days a week to achieve the best results.

  1. Step-Ups

Step-ups are a simple exercise that can help paramedics work their leg and glute muscles. They target the hamstrings and quadriceps that condition the lower body. Paramedics can use a small step stool or use the stairs in their office. The idea is to have a ledge where they can place their foot as they lift their body up and down onto the step.

The key to doing step-ups effectively is to keep the back straight and abdominal muscles engaged. To prevent accidents, it鈥檚 also best to ensure the foot is planted well on the step. For beginners, start with a low step height and gradually increase it when the legs are stronger. Make sure to use alternating feet each time.

General Reminders

Before doing each workout, make sure that your body is warmed up. Walk around for five minutes and do dynamic stretches like arm circles, jumping jacks, or hamstring curls. This will help reduce the chance of injury to the muscles in preparation for the quick workout you鈥檙e about to do.

Remember, there are some necessary attributes to become a paramedic, one of which is being physically fit. If you want to learn more about being a paramedic, explore our Programs page.
