Higher education often means meeting new people, enjoying new experiences, and discovering new places. With lockdowns and pandemic restrictions in place, particularly with uncertainty due to the emergence of COVID variants, much has changed about how students learn.

Estimates show the pandemic affected .

For young adults, missing even one semester is a considerable inconvenience and many plans had to be adjusted in light of the circumstances. This delayed or altered the start of many curriculums—and new careers.

How severe was the impact of the pandemic on higher education?

Economic Impact

In secondary education, school closures mean economic losses, and this has become a pressing concern. A vast reduction in the takes a significant toll on the economy of their host country in revenue loss for accommodation, transportation, retail, telecommunications, insurance, food and beverage industries, and so on. Prolonged restrictions contribute to an economic downturn.

The second cost is the learning loss. Researchers can show that each year of secondary education tends to , so missed opportunities for learning have consequences later in life. Ultimately, poor skills levels can reflect a poor GDP that can equate to a total economic loss of .

Emotional and Mental Impact

University students often suffer from depression and anxiety as they struggle to deal with uncertainty about their future. While a huge percentage of college students are at a higher risk of developing mental health issues, the pandemic exacerbated their concerns even more.

Changes in learning delivery, technological problems, and social isolation cause additional worry about social lives, academic success, and future careers.

How Higher Education Has Changed

The higher education sector has changed dramatically in response to these economic, emotional, and mental health impacts.

Reliance on online learning

While online learning long existed before COVID-19, the pandemic spurred exponential growth in the number of online courses. A report shows that . Even prominent institutions in the US have resorted to online teaching to ensure learning continuity.

While some still offer hybrid learning, it’s now a given that online learning will remain a popular choice among college students, particularly for those who have already adapted to this current mode of instruction and learning. It also helps that many robust online learning platforms now exist to provide students with a variety of avenues for learning.

Postponement of college education

However, not everyone is willing or can learn online. In the US, the as a huge percentage still don’t have access to high-speed internet. For international students, because they don’t want to risk traveling to a foreign country during the pandemic. Moreover, some students defer their studies because some programs, like basic and advanced life support training programs, require special equipment for hands-on learning.

Shift to in-demand career options

With less tolerance for risk, students are focusing their choice of studies in fields where their skills will be needed in the future. For instance, enrollments in the medical field, such as nursing, paramedics, and EMT training, have increased considerably. In 2020, nursing program enrollments rose by almost 6%.

“In the pandemic, we saw an increased visibility of nurses, and I think that’s been inspirational to many people,” Deb Trautman, American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) president and CEO. “It’s a profession where you can make a difference.”

Enrollment in technical schools

Due to the pandemic, many students are turning to technical schools to get their education. Why? Technical schools offer several advantages. One is the access to quality and accredited education at a fraction of the cost of some colleges. With many families affected by the economic downturn due to the pandemic, many couldn’t afford to have huge student loan debts.

Another reason technical schools have become a popular option among students is that it allows them to complete their education faster while targeting skills and knowledge to help them start a career sooner.

Conclusion

The pandemic continues to show that it’s not over, and institutions and students must be willing to adapt to move forward. While it’s good to reassess your options, students need to remain committed to getting the education they want. Explore our programs to learn what courses you can take.

Florida Manatee Residents Can Text 911

Next-generation 9-1-1 systems are here, at least for Florida Manatee County residents. According to Manatee County Emergency Communications Center Chief Jacob A.

Saur, the new 9-1-1 system with text messaging capabilities is fully operational.

Next-generation 9-1-1 services

Legislation for next-generation 9-1-1 systems was placed before U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, D-Florida, last November. However, Manatee County was already ahead when their text-based 9-1-1 system went live in October 2017. Saur had made it one of his primary goals.

“The next generation 9-1-1 technology is so new, but we welcome the new legislation that gives us a pathway,” Saur told The Bradenton Herald. “Manatee County, with or without that legislation, is moving forward.”

Saur is also exploring other ways to improve 9-1-1 efficiency, especially in natural disasters and catastrophes. Getting to people in these kinds of emergencies, like the hurricanes that coastal communities have been experiencing, is vital. People need to be able to reach emergency services when they need it most.

The bill sent to Nelson would garner funding for next-generation 9-1-1 systems across the entire country. In an issued statement, Nelson said: “Upgrading the nation’s 9-1-1 system is literally a life-and-death matter that must become more of a national priority. In this digital world, Americans must have more than one way to access the 9-1-1 assistance they need and expect when emergencies occur. No plea for help should go unanswered because a call center doesn’t have the technology to receive a text, video, or picture.”

9-1-1 in the digital world

Additionally, 9-1-1 systems will have better protection against cyberattacks. The legislation addresses these issues, as well as incorporates a plan for studying new ways to improve 9-1-1 systems in communities.

Smartphone applications will also be added to emergency services. In Manatee County, an app called Pulsepoint alerts CPR-certified individuals when there is a person going into cardiac arrest. This means that a patient in cardiac arrest can get help faster than waiting the six to 10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, which might be too late.

Technology is changing, and 9-1-1 systems need to upgrade in order to keep up with the needs of their communities. Alternative ways for people to reach emergency services means that more people who need it will be able to access it. Text-based 9-1-1 messaging would be critical for someone who cannot safely make a phone call to 9-1-1, such as during a break-in.

Palm Beach County Firefighters and Researchers Unite to Fight Cancer

Firefighters rush to the scene of fires and other emergencies. They are there for us when we need them. But their job of life-savings may come with some risks.

Firefighters are twice as likely to get cancer as civilians. When they enter a burning building, they face carcinogens through the smoke and flames. Protective gear protects them only so much. Over time, the materials they encounter can activate cancer within their bodies.

The risk for cancer

Cancer is the leading cause of death for many firefighters. Some home building materials aren’t carcinogenic until they burn, and firefighters gets soot and smoke on their gear and sometimes into their lungs. Removing protective gear is a process that can still expose firefighters to carcinogenic substances.

So, what can be done to lower the risk of cancer for our firefighters? Researchers and firefighters in Palm Beach County have united to find out. The Firefighter Cancer Initiative seeks to discover what causes cancer in firefighters and how to combat it so that the risk is lowered as firefighters do their jobs. It combines cancer studies with the new prevention protocols development and monitoring technologies.

A shared mission

Fundraising is one of the activities that the firefighters engage in for the Firefighter Cancer Initiative. Research into cancer and prevention protocols requires financing. The firefighters run or bike marathons to raise the necessary funding.

The Firefighter Cancer Initiative began in 2014. It started with a call from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and eventually included other fire departments. The teams wanted firefighters to understand their cancer risk and come up with strategies to prevent cancer. They also provide support for firefighters who are currently dealing with cancer.

Cancer is a real risk for firefighters. Improving their protection protocols can help to reduce that risk. Every time firefighters enter a burning building, they are facing a risk for cancer. The fire departments involved in the Firefighter Cancer Initiative are working together with a shared mission.

The Firefighter Cancer Initiative has seen $3.5 million dollars in state appropriations over the past four years. Through a combination of fundraising and state funding, the initiative hopes to further its goals of cancer research, prevention, and treatment for the hard-working firefighters in the county. Their research will also benefit firefighters across the country.

Florida Fire Department Hires First Female Career Firefighter

Citrus County has a new firefighter on their fire department. Kelly Seiferheld, 29, has been hired as the first female career firefighter on the team and hopes to inspire more women to join their fire departments.

Experiencing the Calling

Seiferheld knew that she wanted to become a firefighter when she had originally been training for the Coast Guard and realized that she had a fear of the water.

However, she experienced a rush when she trained with firefighters on her calls and knew it was the right career for her.

Citrus County Fire Rescue’s Fire Chief Craig Steven says that Seiferheld has the mindset of a firefighter. She has the “heart and desire to help people,” which is more than enough for what a firefighter needs to do their job. Seiferheld also possesses the strength to carry the 126-pound ladder regardless of her 5-foot-four frame.

The fire department has been very welcoming. She feels that she has found a group of brothers, another family when she is on the job. They look out for her, and she looks out for them. Firefighters work in teams. They have to respect each other and look out for each other in order to be effective at their jobs.

New firefighters work for a year under probation. Seiferheld completes her probationary period in July 2018 and looks forward to her career as a firefighter. She told reporters that she wants to inspire other women to join this field.

The Right Mindset

The key to becoming a firefighter is to be determined to do it. Learn as much as you can and retain the information. Physical fitness might be important but not as important as the right mindset for the job.

Seiferheld breaks stereotypes by becoming a firefighter and says that size and gender do not matter in this field. Anyone with the will to become a firefighter can do this.

Fire training can be completed in as little as a year. The associate’s degree in Fire Science takes about two years and prepares firefighters for supervisory roles within their fire departments.

Kelly Seiferheld might be the first female career firefighter at her fire department, but she will not be the last. Women interested in a firefighting career should contact their local fire department and fire schools to learn more about this career
